We’re known as a nation of animal lovers… and now’s our chance to show it for National Pet Month.

What better way to prove we care than by taking our dogs on holiday?

Check into Holbeck Ghyll in the Lake District and you’ll get a warm welcome from the resident golden retriever Daisy. You can pamper your pet with their VIC – Very Important Canine – package, which includes a matching collar and lead, blanket, bowl, toy and organic treats. The hotel is set above Lake Windermere in a perfect location for walkies. One night costs £25 per dog. Dogs there for two or more nights stay free. Armathwaite Hall Country House Hotel & Spa on the shores of Lake Bassenthwaite, also in The Lakes, is running a National Pet Month package.
The luxury hotel is offering doggy dinner, bed and breakfast and a framed family print as a memento for £30.
Pet owners can relax at the hotel’s spa which has a pool with waterfall.

With kennels and walking areas on deck, some of Brittany Ferries’ ships are ideal for pets. You can take a dog or cat on any of its routes to France from £33 return, or to Spain from £69. You must sign up to PETS travel scheme.

Pop to Paris with your pooch and go to the French capital’s largest public park, Jardin du Luxembourg, which has a dog path – and even a little dog fountain. Rooms at Hotel de la Herse d’Or near Place de la Bastille start at £20 per night.

You won’t need to get a pet passport for the Isle of Wight and – even better – dogs travel for free on Wightlink’s ferries. There’s even a dog-themed guide, Pawprint, listing favourite countryside and beach walks. Pet-friendly luxury barn complex Niton Barns in Niton, the most southerly village on the Isle of Wight is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty.
