Train Travel: Cockle Train, South Australia

The Cockle Train from Victor Harbor to Goolwa in South Australia.

The coal-fueled heritage train travels along the oldest steel-railed railway in Australia, dating back to 1887.

The railway was constructed to provide a link between the River Murray and the ocean wharfs at Port Elliot and Victor Harbor. It’s called the “Cockle Train” because back then, people would take a horse-drawn train to Goolwa to collect cockles from the sandy beaches near the Murray mouth.
