The beautiful old city and its streets with excellently preserved antiquities will immediately bring you back to past times. Magnificent walls surrounding the old city are among the best preserved in the Mediterranean.

Lima gives access to the mystical city of Machu Picchu in the Andes, Lake Titicaca in the highlands, the lush Amazon jungle and Peru’s coastal desert. But, before you go to see all of this, it’s worth exploring the capital first. Lima is a city of contrasts: rich and poor, ancient and modern, practical and elegant, fascinating and entertaining.  

Most of this land of tulips, windmills and canals is located below sea level and its capital, Amsterdam, is the largest lakeland village in the world.

Versailles was the former palace and dream castle of the French ‘Sun King’, Louis the Fourteenth. Magnificent fountains decorate the palace’s huge park that was created by 35,000 workers, a hundred hectares of ingenious garden design with a strict symmetry of wide star-shaped garden paths. Versailles served as the model for several European palaces such as those in Potsdam, Vienna and St. Petersburg.  

The Midi canal is in the sun-drenched South of France and is between Agde and Toulouse. The Canal du Midi is ideal for both experienced and novice cruisers with a range of sights, historic attractions and superb wildlife along the way, including a 52km long lock-free section westwards from Beziers. In fact, the very distinctive oval shaped locks are easy to use, being all lock-keeper operated, and they provide memorable punctuations along the route.    

The Palace of Versailles outside Paris, France, was built along an eight-mile axis. The palace’s lavish gardens were Louis XIV’s way of asserting his total command over nature, while Marie Antoinette’s Little Hamlet fulfilled the queen’s rustic fantasy of peasant life.  

Sicily – prepare to be overwhelmed by its contrasts, landscapes, beaches and amazingly diverse, ancient heritage. From its bubbling capital Palermo to age-old Roman and Greek ruins, sun-drenched sands and the ever-present, smouldering Mount Etna, this is one island overflowing with treasures.

Head to the Cairngorms National Park and enjoy excellent food, local ales and malt whiskies in the Rowan Tree Country Hotel, three miles from Aviemore. Work off dinner and breakfast the next day at the Rothiemurchus estate: have a Segway adventure, try gorge walking, or go canoeing on Loch an Eilein, as the birch leaves fall and the rowan berries glow red. Or just put on your walking boots and trek into the hinterland. Enjoy the glorious views over the Cairngorms from Braeriach (1,296m), before the first snows of winter sweep in.

Athens has so much history and culture from the Parthenon that overlooks the city to the Marble Stadium where the first modern Olympic Games were held. Don’t forget to visit the new Acropolis Museum. It’s also a city with lots of activity, such as Plaka where you’ll find many cafes, restaurants and shops and friendly people.
