In these five idyllic port towns sample village life: fishing for anchovies at midnight, savouring the best pesto, picking grapes, and cheering cliff divers. Each pastel town is a delight and in Vernazza Giovanni makes pasta and Granelli sells porcini mushrooms at the tiny street market. You can also see Carrara’s historic quarries where Michelangelo selected his marble.
This video is a look around the beautiful seaside town of Portofino in Italy with travel writer Trevor Claringbold. The house shown at the end of the video is that of Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian premier. It may not be as famous or chic as its neighbour just across the border, but the Italian Riviera in many ways has more to offer than the French equivalent. Liguria, to give this stretch of coast and its hinterland its correct title, can be roughly split into two parts, with the regional capital, Genoa, in the centre.
